DFI Day One
Today was the first day at the course for DFI. DFI stands for Digital Fluency Intensive. I was apprehensive about coming along to the course with so many clever people and here I am.
I learnt a lot about the Manaiakalani Kaupapa and pedagogy. A couple of things that stood out for me was the long journey that this programme has travelled thus far. I had no idea that it began so many years ago and the history behind it's beginnings was interesting- beginning with 13 schools purposely build in such close proximity to each other to avoid the families needing to own a car or a bike even. The programme has been designed to motivate learners to engage with the curriculum, provide a model for 21 C Learning, working with learners to establish an authentic audience and to empower the learners to believe their voice is powerful and valued.
The programme was not about chrome books and was actually implemented with minimal technology and the underlying idea is Learn, Create, Share.
What Did learn today?
I learnt heaps today. A couple of things that stood out for me are:
Google Groups-
I found this interesting and I have leant that this is a great way of sending group messages/emails without leaving anyone out. It also ensures that the conversation is recorded. I learnt that it is better to directly add people to a group, rather than inviting them and relying on them to accept the invitation. I learnt that you can use tags to organise the emails better- similar to that of using labels on a blog.
Voice Typing tool in Google docs is going to be a life saver- not only for me, but also for my students who struggle to record things quickly. I have already used this tool this week to help me cut down time in my work so this is going to help me have more time for other things.
Another top tip I loved and another major time saving trick is knowing how to use google docs to painlessly reference things for assignments etc. Yay for this tip as it even does APA references.
It was also good to learn about using a table to make a poster or to hold information inside a cell. This is really good for me as I have spent ages in the past trying to get things to stay in the right place on the page.
